Our History

The Pastoral has always been the centre of good times in Port Augusta.

When it was built in 1882, it even included a “skittle alley”. Maybe that was because competition was so stiff! The Pt Augusta Heritage Review notes that it was “erected during the boom years in Port Augusta where between 1878 and 1883, twelve hotels were built.”

It was built by none other than famous South Australian vigneron, Thomas Hardy. (Thanks Sir Tom. We’ll raise a glass to you tonight.)

“The hotel is of local heritage significance primarily because of its identification with the social and business history of Port Augusta,” says The Pt Augusta Heritage Review notes.

“The size and scale and prominent corner location of the building also means that it is a major feature of the streetscape.”

That’s true, but we reckon it’s famous because of our cold beer, fabulous food, and country hospitality.
